The State Bank of Pakistan's payment systems review for January to March 2026 recorded 2.9 billion transactions through mobile banking apps, worth PKR 42 trillion. That is 78% of every digital payment made in the country in those three months. Across the same quarter, digital channels carried 92% of all retail payments, 3.4 billion transactions worth PKR 68 trillion.

The number worth sitting with is not the trillions. It is that the phone is now the default surface for commerce in Pakistan. And the phone is where local search happens, which is where most Pakistani businesses are still close to invisible.

If somebody in Johar Town opens Google Maps and types a category, a short list appears. Three businesses get most of the attention. Everyone else is a scroll away, which in practice means nowhere. Getting onto that short list is a specific, learnable piece of work, and it is cheaper than almost anything else in marketing.

What actually decides who shows up in the Google Maps results?

Google weighs three things: how relevant a profile is to what was typed, how close the business is to the searcher, and how prominent it appears to be. You cannot change distance. You can change relevance and prominence, and most Pakistani businesses have barely started on either.

Relevance is mostly about how completely and accurately the profile describes what you do. Prominence is built from reviews, from consistency of your details across the web, and from the strength of the website behind the listing. Neither is a trick. Both are maintenance.

What does a complete Google Business Profile look like?

A complete profile has the correct primary category, the secondary categories that genuinely apply, real opening hours, a phone number that is answered, a website link, a service area if you travel to customers, and photographs that were taken this year. Most profiles in Pakistan fail on at least three of those.

Category is the one that costs the most and is fixed in a minute. A business that has chosen a vague primary category is competing for the wrong searches, and no amount of review-gathering fixes a category mismatch. Pick the category that describes what you sell, not the one that describes your ambition.

Why do reviews matter more in Pakistan than most owners think?

Because the review count in a market with thin competition is often the entire difference between position one and position six. Where a category has ten listed businesses and the top one has forty reviews and the rest have four, the gap is not quality. It is that one owner asked and the others did not.

Asking is the whole mechanism, and it has to be systematic rather than occasional. A message sent the day after delivery, with a direct link to the review form, converts at a rate that surprises people. A sign on the counter does almost nothing. Never pay for reviews, never write them yourself, and never gate the request so only happy customers see it, because all three eventually cost more than they return.

What is NAP consistency and does it really matter here?

NAP means name, address and phone number, and consistency means those three strings are identical everywhere they appear online. Your Google profile, your website footer, your Facebook page, any directory listing. When they disagree, Google has less confidence that the listings describe one business, and confidence is part of prominence.

In Pakistan this breaks in a predictable way. The phone number appears with and without the country code, the address uses Block C on one listing and C Block on another, and the business name has a suffix on Facebook that appears nowhere else. None of it looks important. Collectively it is a drag on the one thing you were trying to build.

Does the website behind the listing still matter?

Yes, and this is the part that gets skipped. The profile is a shopfront, but Google reads the site it points to when deciding how seriously to take the listing. A site that loads slowly on a mid-range Android phone, has no clear address, and does not say which areas it serves, weakens the profile it is attached to.

The fix is unglamorous. A page per location or service area with real text on it, the same NAP as the profile, a phone number that is a tappable link, and load times that survive a 3G connection in a basement. Our website design and development work in Pakistan spends more time on that last point than on anything visual, because a fast, plain page beats a slow, beautiful one on a phone every time.

How long does local search work take to show results?

Longer than an ad and shorter than national SEO. A profile that was incomplete and becomes complete often moves within a few weeks, because the relevance signals changed immediately. Review-driven prominence moves over months, because it depends on accumulating something you cannot rush.

Anyone promising a map-pack position by a date is describing something they do not control. What can be promised is the work: the profile corrected, the categories right, the review request built into how you deliver, the site pages that support it. That is the honest version, and it is the version that holds up.

What does this cost in Pakistan?

Less than most owners expect, because a large share of it is one-off correction rather than ongoing spend. Fixing a profile, aligning your details across the web and building a review request into your delivery process is a few days of work, not a permanent retainer.

Ongoing local search work sits at the lower end of the ranges we set out in our guide to what a digital marketing agency costs in Pakistan, and for a single-location business it is often the highest-return line in the whole budget. It is also the work most likely to be sold badly, as a monthly report full of numbers that do not correspond to enquiries.

Who should not prioritise this?

Businesses whose customers do not search by location. If you sell nationally by courier, or you are an exporter, or your buyers find you through referral and WhatsApp alone, map visibility is a small lever and there are bigger ones. The rise in digital payments and the average online order value in Pakistan points at a different set of priorities for those businesses.

It also matters less for sectors where trust is established through credentials rather than proximity. Professional firms are the clearest example, and we have written separately about how that plays out in our guide to digital marketing for accounting firms. The mechanism there is authority and referenced work, not a pin on a map.

What about businesses with more than one branch?

Multi-location businesses in Pakistan usually make one of two mistakes. Either every branch shares a single profile, so only one location can ever appear in a nearby search, or each branch has a profile that nobody maintains, and three of the five list hours that stopped being true in 2024.

The correct structure is one profile per physical location that customers can visit, each with its own address, its own phone number where possible, and its own photographs. On the website, one page per branch, each with that branch's details in text rather than inside an image. It is more work to set up and almost no work to maintain once it exists.

The failure mode to watch is the shared phone number routed through a head office. It is not fatal, but it weakens the distinction between locations, and it usually means the person answering cannot tell the caller whether the Gulberg branch has the item in stock. Local search brings the call. Something still has to happen when it arrives.

How does this interact with paid advertising?

They solve different problems and the common mistake is treating them as alternatives. Advertising buys attention from people who were not looking for you. Local search captures people who were already looking for what you sell, near where you sell it. The second group is smaller and converts far better, which is why it is worth fixing first.

The practical sequence for a business with a limited budget is to correct the profile and the site pages before spending anything on ads, because ad traffic landing on a slow page with the wrong phone number wastes money at a faster rate. Once the basics hold, advertising extends reach rather than compensating for a broken foundation.

Where to start this week

Open your own profile on a phone, logged out, and look at it as a customer would. Check the primary category against what you actually sell. Count your reviews and compare them with the two businesses above you. Tap the phone number and see whether it dials. Tap the website link and count how long the page takes to appear.

That audit takes twenty minutes and usually produces three or four fixes worth more than a month of posting. If you want the rest of it handled, our search engine optimisation work and our digital marketing services for businesses in Pakistan start from exactly that audit rather than from a package.

We keep 82% of our clients, and local search is a large part of why, because it is the kind of work where the result is visible to the owner without needing a report to explain it. You either appear when somebody nearby searches, or you do not. There are few arguments about that.

FAQs

How do I rank higher on Google Maps in Pakistan?

Google weighs relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance, so the work is completing your Google Business Profile accurately, choosing the correct primary category, gathering genuine reviews consistently, keeping your name, address and phone number identical everywhere online, and making sure the website behind the listing loads quickly on a phone.

How many reviews does a business in Pakistan need?

There is no fixed number. What matters is your count relative to the businesses currently above you in the results. In categories with thin competition, the leading listing often has forty reviews while the rest have a handful, and the difference is simply that one owner asked customers systematically and the others did not.

What is NAP consistency?

Name, address and phone number appearing identically everywhere your business is listed online. In Pakistan it commonly breaks through phone numbers written with and without the country code, addresses using Block C and C Block interchangeably, and business names carrying a suffix on Facebook that appears nowhere else.

How long does local SEO take to work in Pakistan?

Profile completeness changes can move a listing within a few weeks because the relevance signals change immediately. Review-driven prominence takes months because it depends on accumulating something that cannot be rushed. Anyone naming a date for a specific map position is describing an outcome they do not control.

Does my website still matter if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google reads the site the listing points to when judging how seriously to take it. A slow page on a mid-range Android phone, with no clear address and no statement of which areas you serve, weakens the profile attached to it.

Which Pakistani businesses should not prioritise local search?

Those whose customers do not search by location: national couriers, exporters, and businesses that win work almost entirely through referral. Professional firms where trust comes from credentials rather than proximity also get less from map visibility than from authority-building content.
